CHAPTER EIGHT

I opened the oven door and slid the chicken to the front. It was browning nicely and the creamy mushroom sauce it was baking in looked yummy.

I had barely popped it back in the oven when the doorbell rang. Harve! He was early and I couldn’t wait to see him. My kids had gone to my mom’s house and Oscar was away at a two day youth retreat, so it would be just the two of us. Though I was less than thrilled that Harve worked for my competition, I’d accepted it and tried not to dwell on it. We’d continued to date, and tonight was the one-month anniversary of when we’d first met.

“I’m coming!” I undid my apron and tossed it in a drawer, then quickly rushed to the door. I’d barely had a chance to open it before Harve pulled me into his arms, despite one big hand of his holding a bottle of wine and a bouquet of fragrant flowers.

“Mmm baby, it’s so good to see you. You look beautiful as usual. I especially like the decoration on your nose.”

“…decoration on my nose?” I took a quick peek in the hallway mirror.

“Yikes.” I wiped the flour away and took the wine and roses from Harve. “Ooh, the flowers are gorgeous. You’re so sweet, you didn’t have to do this.” I placed them down on the counter.

“Yes I did. You deserve the best.” Harve’s nose twitched, “I smell something good.”

“I made baked chicken with mushrooms. It’s in a garlic, lemon, and cream sauce with lots of spices.”

“It will be perfect with the wine I picked out. I can’t wait to taste it…but first, I want to taste your sweet lips,” he smiled sexily.

A little flutter went through my belly as Harve pulled me towards him. He held me tightly and our lips met in a deep, long kiss.

“Mmm, your lips are finer than any wine.”

I laughed as I kissed him again. “You’re silly, Harve, but I have to admit, your lips are pretty nice too.”

“Oh, you think my lips are pretty nice, do you? Let’s see just how nice they can be.” With one swoop, Harve picked me up and set me down on the sofa. “How do you like my mouth here,” he whispered. Harve brushed his lips along my neck and up to my ear.

I could feel the tiny hairs on my skin prickling.

He looked deeply into my eyes. His gaze said everything.

A shiver ran through me and I swallowed hard.

“Baby, I want…”

Before he had a chance to finish his sentence, the buzzer on the oven went off.

“I need to get that,” I said, breaking away from him. As I walked quickly to the oven, my mind was a whirl of emotions. Was I ready to take the next step with Harve? I knew he wanted me and I wanted him, but there were a lot of other things to think about…the kids…work…and, even though I tried not to think about it—we were still competitors.
